Liana has rejoined friends and former colleagues here at Affleck Hrabinsky Burgoyne LLP, having focussed her practice on Family Law and Wills and Estates since 1992.  She brings her considerable experience to resolving the difficult and often contentious issues faced by families in transition. Previous careers in the banking and insurance fields have given her a solid background in the often complex process of dividing family assets and personal estates.

Family matters remain Liana’s primary focus,  including  Mediation and Collaborative Law in addition to negotiation and litigation. This includes significant experience drafting plain language Cohabitation,  Marriage, and Separation Agreements. Liana also handles property law constructive trust matters. Wills and Estates practice includes wills drafting, estate mediation and contested estates. One reported trial decision, Danchuk v. Calderwood is still cited with authority concerning cases of “undue influence” in the making of a will.

With her straight forward client-centred approach, Liana seeks to provide creative solutions to complex problems. Her strong academic qualifications and significant Court experience at both Provincial and Supreme Court levels provide her with a wide range of options for solving those problems, whether through Court process,  negotiated settlement or the Collaborative contract.

Liana obtained a First Class Honours degree in History and International Relations from the University of British Columbia before moving on to Law School to obtain her current designation as Juris Doctor.

Liana ‘s commitment to the community is strong. She has appeared as a panellist and contributing author at Continuing Legal Education and Trial Lawyers’ Association seminars, participated in editing practice manuals and regularly lectured on family law and estate planning for community organizations.  She has demonstrated a commitment to higher learning as a non-regular faculty member of Capilano University, instructing in Paralegal Studies. Liana is proud to be a member since its inception of the Vancouver Collaborative Divorce group, a voluntary association of lawyers, psychologists, counsellors and financial advisors who meet regularly to address the difficult issues facing separated families. Liana has found this to be an invaluable resource in connecting with like-minded individuals committed to reducing the negative impact of separation on the modern family.

A lifetime North Shore resident, Liana loves the scenery and recreational amenities of her Deep Cove neighbourhood and is an active soccer and baseball parent.
